Daniel Murray is Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the Year

Mobile fashion app, Grabble, is revolutionising online shopping, enabling small, independent businesses to target shoppers alongside high street brands.
Daniel Murray, a 28-year old entrepreneur from London, has won the 2014 Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. His business has developed an app which lets mobile shoppers browse and save their favourite fashion products from any site and organise them into personalised collections. The service then sends shoppers sale alerts on items they have ’liked’.
The app, Grabble, is destined to level online shopping by allowing smaller retailers to gain direct access to 18-30 year old consumers and trade alongside larger brand names. Daniel was inspired to design Grabble after working at a daily deal site where smaller brands struggled to compete against bigger retailers. He noticed a gap in the market for fashion targeted at mobile engaged younger shoppers. The app has already generated over 61,000 downloads within two months, with users averaging three million swipes a week.
Daniel stood out as the winner from more than 600 start-up businesses – each reflecting innovative ideas that could become leading brand names of the future. Grabble has received £10,000 of funding alongside exclusive mentoring sessions with a Shell Foundation Business Development Executive who will closely review the business with the aim of helping Daniel identify opportunities for strategic growth, particularly in expanding into the booming Asian online market.
Grabble is available across iOS and Android operating systems and with Shell’s funding Daniel is now planning on developing software for Windows users, opening up the platform to a further potential three million users.
Daniel Murray said: “Winning Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the Year is such a fantastic honour and is a great vote of confidence in Grabble’s potential to connect smaller brands with young fashion consumers. The funding, business workshops and mentoring programme will help me take the next step by developing software for all mobile platforms, while Shell’s endorsement will be a real boost when we discuss our future with venture capitalists in the US and China.”
Shell LiveWIRE judge Carrie Bedingfield, Founder of 50th Generation, said: “I really believe in Daniel. Lots of people develop apps – but Grabble is doing something different and important. I can see Grabble creating huge growth for the wide range of smaller shops who could never compete with the high street giants on marketing budget alone.”
This year’s entries included a wide range of innovative business ideas, from sports safety equipment to renewable energy. Reflecting the extremely high quality of this year’s applicants, Shell awarded the Future Impact Award to 24-year old Samuel Etherington founder of Aqua Power Technologies - a revolutionary tidal power energy generator. This award is for innovative and potentially industry-changing ideas, and Samuel hugely impressed the judges with his unique approach to converting wave energy into electricity.
Shell LiveWIRE judge Clare Harris, Business Partnerships Manager at British Library Business, said: “Sam is an inspirational winner. A rare breed, he is a young engineer who has successfully taken his entrepreneurial idea to fruition. Aqua Power Technologies has impressed me by building on existing renewable technologies and delivering a product that could bring this technology into the mainstream.”
Samuel said: “It’s amazing to have recognition of the potential of Aqua Power from Shell LiveWIRE. Engineering runs in my family and the award offers a real opportunity to showcase to other young people how their passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics can be combined with starting up their own business.  We believe our technology is unique and industry leading, and that’s what’s important – helping to tackle the challenge of renewables through efficiently converting energy from waves straight to the grid. The Shell LiveWIRE funding allows me to patent one of our three main products, something which is vital in helping us approach investors for Aqua Power in the future.”

Shell’s commitment to youth enterprise

For over 30 years, Shell LiveWIRE has supported more than 600,000 young entrepreneurs in the UK to start-up their own business and contribute to the growth of the UK economy through job creation, exports and innovation. The programme’s success has led to its rapid expansion – it now supports young entrepreneurs in 15 countries around the world.

Shell LiveWIRE launched its mentoring programme this week which directly responds to the findings of a report, 'Unlocking Ambitions, Creating Growth’, by the Prince’s Youth Business International (YBI) and Shell LiveWIRE. The report recommends that young UK entrepreneurs are given greater access to business mentoring to allow them to fulfill their potential.
All eight Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the Year finalists will receive mentoring from a Shell employee as well as a Shell LiveWIRE alumni member, who will be specifically chosen to help the entrepreneur fulfil their individual business ambitions. The mentoring package is designed to give the finalists a combination of support from those who have been in their shoes a few years ago when they started up their own business as well as some strategic corporate support.
Over the last 32 years, the Shell LiveWIRE UK programme has awarded over £5 million of funding to approximately 5,100 young entrepreneurs across the UK, and is an important part of Shell’s commitment to inspiring and supporting the next generation of young people to innovate and provide real solutions to today’s societal challenges. Taking part in the Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the Year programme gives young entrepreneurs the opportunity to develop and expand the strategic knowledge and skills essential for thriving in business.
