Sam Rogers (Braw Power)

Sam Rogers won a Shell LiveWIRE Smarter Future Award in April 2017 for his business, Braw Power.
​In 2016, an estimated 1.2 billion people – 16% of the global population – did not have access to electricity. Of these, more than 95% live in predominantly rural areas in countries in sub-Saharan Africa and developing Asia 1. To address this, 29-year old Scottish entrepreneur Sam Rogers started Braw Power to develop renewable, off-grid power products to those without access to electricity.
Braw Power’s first product is a personal wind turbine, which can be used to power handheld electronic devices, like smartphones, of those practicing outdoor adventure sports and activities. Although the initial market focuses on developed countries, in the future, Sam’s aim is to use the proceeds from sales of his products to subsidise the sales of products in developing countries.
The innovative part of Braw Power’s business model lies in scaling a wind turbine down to handheld size, so that it is suitable for personal electronic items. Sam believes the benefits of wind power haven’t been thoroughly investigated, and that the UK market holds a great deal of untapped potential for wind powered products.
