Daniel Murray (Grabble)

Daniel Murray won a Grand Ideas Award in January 2014 and was awarded the 2014 Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
Founded: 2014
Country: London
28 year old digital pioneer Daniel Murray’s Grabble app, set up with business partner Joel Freeman, is set to shake up the UK’s fashion retail industry, one swipe at a time. Grabble allows fashionistas to ‘grab’ items on the go by swiping right to like or left to pass creating the ultimate fashion wish list.  Users can also access their wish list directly on their desktop Grabble account allowing purchases to be made on a tablet or laptop.
No stranger to starting his own business, Daniel’s inspiration for Grabble came while working at a daily deals site he founded.  Noticing smaller brands couldn’t compete with bigger high street brands on marketing budget alone, he set about creating a disruptive platform to enable smaller retailers access to a broader consumer audience.
As a young entrepreneur, Daniel turned to the Shell LiveWIRE Youth Enterprise programme which secured him a £1,000 start-up grant. The funding helped with the development and marketing of the app ahead of launch.  Within the first two months, Grabble generated 61,000 downloads, trended nationally on Twitter and featured on the iTunes and GooglePlay stores as “Best New App” in 34 countries.   Daniel’s ambition is to connect consumers with new fashion brands and smaller retailers not trading on the high street.   A win-win situation for both small retailers and consumers with a passion for fashion.
The Shell LiveWIRE programme supports and recognises young UK start-ups aiming to address broader societal challenges. Daniel was named the 2014 Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the Year for his game changing business model that provides a trading platform for smaller retailers.  He received £10,000 in funding which he will use to develop Grabble on all three main mobile operating systems, bringing the app to a more customers.  Daniel says being the Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the Year opened new doors internationally, attracting investors in Silicon Valley and further afield. The exposure and recognition helped Grabble achieve its funding target of £1 million within the coming months.
With the UK e-commerce market expected to treble from £13 billion  in 2014 to £45 billion  by 2020, Grabble is set to unlock a much larger market for smaller retailers.  The biggest focus for Daniel over the coming months will be to take the app to scale, seeking expansion in two of the world’s largest e-commerce markets, the US, valued in excess of $300 billion  this year and China, where sales topped $217 billion  during the same period.  As a Shell LiveWIRE winner Daniel will have access to mentoring from business experts in Shell, helping him to realise his ambitions of growing the business in the UK and to expand internationally.
