Moya is a wind energy harvesting, flexible sheeting material that is designed to scavenge-off low grade wind energy, which is most abundantly found against existing infrastructure. This involves transforming vibrations and low speed, turbulent winds into electricity 24 hours a day across vacant and expansive surfaces around the city. The sheets can be mounted on otherwise unused surfaces, hidden from public view. Moya takes advantage of low-grade turbulent winds, the kind of wind that is most abundant within our cities. Unlike current wind turbines, Moya does not require strong or unobstructed winds in order to generate energy.

Winner of a Shell LiveWIRE Smarter Future Award in November 2015, Edible Bug Farm produces human grade edible insects using scientific management principles. They aim to be a leading expert and pioneer in the entomophagy industry, offering an alternative solution to the imminent global food security crisis facing the world today. The farming technologies they are developing are designed specifically to be automated, cost-efficient, sustainable, and can be easily replicated to meet demand. The UN estimates around 70% of global agricultural land and fresh water is currently dedicated to farming livestock. Compared to traditional livestock, insects such as crickets have been found to be at least 11 times more efficient when it comes to feed to meat conversion. Whilst cows produce only 4kg of beef per 100 kg of feed, crickets produce 47kg of meat. Insects also require around 0.0005% of the water needed to produce the same amount of edible protein.

Using food waste as the input and the Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia Illucens) as the key catalyst, their process generates biodiesel from modified insect fats, with high protein animal feed and fertiliser/biopesticide arising as side products. Each of their products acts as ‘fuel’ for a different industry – biodiesel in heating your house and powering your car (Energy and Transportation), animal feed in raising chickens, fish and other livestock (Livestock Farming) and fertiliser/biopesticide in improving agricultural yields (Agriculture).

Manufactured in Europe, they differentiate from the rest by offering consumables with environmental credentials such as a low carbon footprint and advocate degradable bioplastics as opposed to harmful alternatives. Their first product, the Current Table, functions as a source of energy to charge your devices. The entire top surface of the Current Table is made of dye-sensitised solar cells which, unlike traditional PV cells, operate efficiently under diffused sunlight. This makes Current Table the first piece of furniture capable of harvesting energy indoors. CAVENTOU is working with tech companies to develop a sensor that is integrated into the table to make it a smart object, which reads information on its environment, such as light intensity, and shares this back to the user.

Adaptavate are developing bio-based building products that lock carbon into the fabric of buildings, helping to mitigate CO2 driven climate change. Adaptavate's first product, Breathaboard, is a bio-based alternative to the ubiquitous building material used for internal lining in buildings: plasterboard. It's installed in exactly the same way, except it provides a carbon sequestering potential to help mitigate CO2 driven climate change, and it is made of 75% plant matter so it provides a renewable solution to the 15 million tonnes of plasterboard that goes to landfill each year globally.
Winner of the May 2015 Shell LiveWIRE Smarter Future Award, Naturosys creates organic fertiliser and fish feed from food waste. Last year the UK produced 13 million tonnes of food waste, costing the economy billions. This waste is either sent to landfill or to composting facilities with a considerable loss in valuable nutrients. Naturosys intend to harness these wasted nutrients by converting them into fertiliser and animal feed ingredients to make healthy animal feed, while at the same time reducing dependence on landfills and composting facilities.
Winner of the April 2015 Shell LiveWIRE Smarter Future Award, Penumbra Power is a technology start-up committed to the reduction of emissions from vehicle exhaust gasses through their innovation, currently called ‘Pre-Treatment'. The internal combustion engine is set to be around for a long time and the UK automotive council's most forward looking roadmap up to 2050 still expects continuing IC engine development, particularly in commercial vehicles. As a result, the emissions associated with these engines will be under continuing scrutiny for the foreseeable future. Penumbra Power’s product would be retrofitted to current exhaust systems and would replace part or all of current after-treatment systems used in trucks and vehicles, improving air quality and significantly reducing emissions.

Almost half of all purchased food is wasted and the impact of food loss throughout the supply chain, from initial agricultural production down to final household consumption, is not just financial. It also means that fertilizers, pesticides and transport fuel have been wasted.
