George Foot Wins May's Shell LiveWIRE Smarter Future Award!

Wed, 29 June 2016

George Foot won May’s Shell LiveWIRE Smarter Future Award for his business, Cove.
Microplastics represent a massive ecological and economic threat, causing $13bn per year in environmental damage. At the same time, 8 million tonnes of seashell waste are produced globally. This natural resource is difficult and costly to dispose of, with 60% of all shellfish waste in the UK going to landfill and 20% returning to the ocean. Cove tackles both problems by utilising upcycled seashells as a low-cost microplastic replacement in cosmetics, creating a high-end exfoliant that is naturally skin regenerative. Seashells will be collected from local sea food producers and cleaned to remove any remaining soft tissue and autoclaved to kill microbial contaminants. The shells will then be ground into particle sizes of 1-2mm, to create an exfoliant that will replace microplastics.

Commiserations to Hoyan Ip (Bio-Trimmings), Hannah McCollum (ChicP), Can Ozkutan (eSykel) and Louis Pohl (Foodhall Project) who were shortlisted but did not win this time and are encouraged to reapply.
