Founded in 2009 by Nick Proctor, Amber Energy Consultants provide solutions to the complex world of energy.

The business’ mission is to develop trusted, innovative solutions that reduce the cost of energy, reliance on energy from the grid, and which propel the UK forward towards zero carbon intensity. They do this by working with businesses to consider all areas of energy management, considering how to buy it, how and when to use it, and how to install renewable energy.

Their passion is providing a fully integrated service where clients are educated and costs managed downwards, consulting on every part of an energy bill so clients are aware of what makes up their total costs. They increase the value of businesses and improve their operational efficiency by lowering their energy costs.

Nick was 25 years-old and working in the banking industry when he got the idea for Amber Energy. After continuing to come across clients who had a limited understanding of their energy set-up, the volatility of energy costs, and the actual price of the energy they were consuming, he became determined to help businesses understand their energy needs and maximise their usage so they could buy smart, use smart, and generate their own power to offset grid demands.

Part of the business’ job is to look critically at their clients’ energy bills, work out what it actually means, and then pull out anything that they don’t need to be charged for. Working this way helped them to save one of their clients £130,000 in energy bills. To keep bills low and to save their clients’ time, they pick up all the responsibilities of bill checking, data collection, and compliance. In essence, working with Amber Energy means saving money, achieving greater operational efficiency, remaining compliant with legislation, and ultimately securing a higher value for your business.

Now six years into his journey, Nick has kept that drive and passion that got the business going and the business continues to go from strength to strength, now employing over 20 people and winning a number of awards including the 2010 Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the Year (South East and South West) Award, the Smarta 100, and Energy Efficiency Partnership of the Year 2014, among others.

Nick has been shortlisted for Shell LiveWIRE International’s Top Ten Innovators Awards, which could see him win up to $15,000 for his business. He had this to say about being shortlisted:

“Innovators is a great initiative from Shell. For me it’s recognition for being disruptive and staying true to our mission. To win would allow us to launch our first not-for-profit project we have ear-marked for 2016. It’s an exciting place to be at Amber at the moment and we’re excited about the recognition we’ve received for this award.”
