Flashback to 2003: Catching Up with Jodie Welton

In 2003 Jodie Welton represented Dorset in the South West Region Shell LiveWIRE Final with her business, Hour25 Ltd.
Now co-founder of Connected PR, we caught up with Jodie to find out how things have changed since.

What can you remember about your involvement with Shell LiveWIRE?
My Shell LiveWIRE experience was an altogether positive one; it helped me focus on my business plan at the time and the access to a business advisor gave me the ongoing support that I needed.

How have things changed for you since you won your Shell LiveWIRE award?
Well, my sister and I became business partners 7 years ago and set up Connected PR, a global PR agency. We have been working together ever since and I’m happy to say the agency is going very well. We have worked with exciting brands from both consumer technology and the food and drinks industry including Wyke Farms, Mariani Beef Jerky, Plum Baby, Juice Doctor, Plantronics, Altec Lansing, Twenga, Blurb and many more. I was also included in the ‘Who’s Who of Britain’s Business Elite’ in both 2010 and 2011.

How have you had to adapt as an entrepreneur over the years?
The biggest change has been the growth and many different ways of incorporating social media in business. This did not exist 10 years ago when I won the Shell LiveWIRE Award. At Connected PR we have found it to be a great platform for both our company and our clients - to carry out research, make contacts and of course promote and sell – all really important for entrepreneurs!
What has been the biggest obstacle you have overcome in business?
I think most entrepreneurs find red tape tricky and I’m no exception. There are numerous rules and regulations that you need to abide by when employing people and this has definitely been a challenge for me to understand.

What are your top 3 tips for a young entrepreneur about to set up in business?
1. Be flexible and embrace change –technology has shaped business and it moves quickly so it’s really important to move with it (or ahead of it!)
2. Don’t take the knocks personally – when things don’t go well, acknowledge it and move on.
3. Try and collaborate with people who are smarter than you!
