Apparently, new research from The Local Data Company shows that 40% of ex-Woolworths stores still remain empty (Source: bdaily)!

This makes me ANGRY as it's such a waste and makes our towns and cities looks awful, and does nothing to make them vibrant and successful places to live and work. However, it doesn't reveal the full story.

Walk down any high street in Britain's towns and cities and you'll see numerous empty retail units that have remained dormant (or will stay that way for months or even years at a time). Yet why should that be? There's no shortage of people wanting to start up in business but the big stumbling block is the astronomical business rates that landlords charge for properties.

Even in Newcastle upon Tyne I've seen small units costing upwards of £20,000 a year and that's before staff wages, stock and other business costs have been taken into account. No wonder so many new businesses fail...

I think that local authorities should force landlords to reduce their business rates considerably to encourage new businesses to move in, or possibly issue something like a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) so that they can help stimulate economic growth in our towns and cities by either reducing rates or even giving them away rent-free for the first 12 months.

The benefits to such actions would include;

- helping more new businesses get established, surviving beyond their first year so they can grow and provide more local jobs
- filling the unsightly and depressing void left by empty retail units
- putting more money back into the local economy as retailers purchase more stock from local suppliers, shoppers support local businesses and tourists buy things from the unique businesses available in our towns and cities that they can't get anywhere else
- it would also make local residents feel more proud of their towns and cities as there are fewer things more depressing than walking through a ghost town or a street that feels forgotten and unloved

A great example of where a local authority has given some empty retail units over to new businesses is the fantastic 'Starter for Ten' project run by Gateshead Council. Originally conceived by design guru Wayne Hemingway MBE, this project has seen an empty furniture store in Gateshead high street turned into rent-free workspace for 11 new creative businesses at 'The Shed'.

I hope that more local authorities take note of what Gateshead council is doing here and look forward to the day when empty retail units on our high streets are a thing of the past.

As news comes in of yet another record-breaking year for A Level results in Britain, I wonder whether young people are being given the best advice by parents, teachers and the media, about what to do next. If you're not sure what to do after A Levels, read on...

With a current shortage of university places and jobs for graduates, high dropout rates from students that probably weren't cut out for academia in the first place, and average student debt around the £25,000 mark (yikes!) is going to university still the best option for our young people?

When I took my A Levels (15yrs ago!) I distinctly recall being told that going to university and getting a degree was the only way I could guarantee a bright future, or risk being left behind on the scrapheap. I wasn't even sure that university was something I wanted to do but when I voiced these concerns to my dear parents I was told in no uncertain terms that 'dropping out' wasn't an option.

Like most students I worked hard at university - ending up with a 2:1 in Geography BSc (Hons) at The University of Leeds, and had a fantastic time living away from home and enjoying myself to the full. I managed to maintain the right balance between having fun and putting the work in and I am proud of my degree and the experiences I had.

HOWEVER, my Geography degree has been of very little benefit to my career which has mostly been in IT (with a brief sojourn into the music business as a DJ / producer / promoter / record label owner) along the way!

For example;

Sage - no degree needed

Upon graduation in 1998, I travelled the length and breadth of the country in search of the 'holy grail' - a graduate recruitment scheme with a top employer, only to have my hopes and dreams dashed again and again by what seemed like endless interviews, assessment days and psychometric tests - until I eventually found employment with Sage, a local hero up here in the North East providing tech support to users of their Sage Payroll software.

I spent 2yrs at Sage and the customer service training they provided was first rate and still benefits me to this day. However, when I joined Sage it was slightly demoralising to find that you didn't actually need a degree to get a job there, and very few of my colleagues seemed to have set foot in a university - although they were all extremely intelligent, quick thinking and with excellent customer service skills, groomed and honed on the job by regular training and tests.

British Airways - degree needed

After a while, I grew tired of 'working on the phones' at Sage and after teaching myself web design in my spare time, was lucky enough to be taken on by British Airways as a graduate trainee web developer / web editor in their Newcastle upon Tyne office.

There's no doubt I wouldn't have been taken on as part of a 'graduate training scheme' without my degree, but my previous 2yrs work experience and the web design skills I had taught myself in my spare time were ultimately more important and useful to the job. The degree just helped me get through the initial sift of applicants. Sadly, although this was an excellent job, I was one of many staff made redundant by BA as a direct result of the 9/11 attacks which meant the airline was haemorrhaging and needed to cut costs quickly (staff are always the first to go).

12 months inbetween

The next 12 months were spent in and out of employment as I worked intermittently on short term IT contracts, signing on the dole and trying to break into the music business as a DJ / producer getting the first of my records signed to a local independent label, until eventually...

BT Broadband - no degree needed

After realising that I did actually need some money to support my 'superstar DJ lifestyle' which hadn't yet resulted in a huge pay-off, I got a job again in tech support for BT Broadband. This was probably the most depressing period as I hated the job, was only doing it for bit of extra cash until the DJing / music, and again found out that a degree was of no real value or worth to my new employers. Needless to say, I didn't stick around long before applying for, and getting a job with music development agency Generator...

Generator - no degree needed

On paper, this should have been my dream job. Working in an organisation that helped grass roots musicians (like myself) make it into the music industry whilst I spent my evenings and weekends as a DJ / producer / promoter / label owner. There's no doubt there was a definite 'cool factor' to this job and I learnt a lot during my time, particularly by working alongside legendary North East promoter Jim Mawdsley. There were also lots of highlights, including getting to see Maximo Park and Field Music when they were still unknown outside of Newcastle/Sunderland and (possibly) playing a small part in getting them signed by telling the A&R scouts that travelled up to Generator-sponsored events that they needed to see these bands!

Like many creative industry jobs, the money at Generator was just too low for me and after getting increasingly frustrated that I wasn't being paid or valued enough for someone with my background, skills, experience (and degree) I left to join local enterprise agency PNE Group where I've now been for the past 5yrs (since 2005).

PNE Group / Shell LiveWIRE - degree needed? Maybe...

Although I'm not actually sure if the degree got me the job, I'm 100% certain that it's all the experience, skills and knowledge I have accumulated along the way since leaving university that has been of most value to PNE in my previous roles working on the voluntaryskills.com website and now as Web Development Executive for Shell LiveWIRE (run by PNE on behalf of Shell).

It's easy for me to criticise universities when I've already got a degree, but that's not really my point. However, in recent years, I've been increasingly thinking that it isn't right for everyone. Yes, education is important but you can learn on the job (incl. apprenticeships) and do evening classes or home study through people like the Open University. Also, instead of saddling yourself with huge debts when you leave university, you be earning money by working for someone else (building up your savings to go towards a home in the future) or even starting your own little enterprise, with the help of people like us (Shell LiveWIRE).

Many people go on about the invaluable experience of going to university which they see as more important than the qualification. However, I'd argue that by taking a bank loan out of £25,000 (or much less) you can have even more amazing experiences travelling the world, working for yourself, doing charitable work in another country - the list is endless - and at the end of it be an even more interesting and employable person than 'a.n.other graduate'. Something to think about at least.

If you are thinking of starting a business, take a look at our Business Library or win funding and PR for your idea(s) at: www.shell-livewire.org/awards/ (£1,000 and £10,000 prizes available).

This has been quite helpful to me and others in the Shell LiveWIRE UK team as we often just focus on this Discussion Forum, Social Network and the Awards but I hope you can see that there is a lot more on offer which you might not have realised.

At the NACUE 'Business Not As Usual' conference this weekend, a couple of speakers questioned why Shell was involved in youth enterprise so I thought it might be useful / interesting for people on here to know more a little bit more about the history of the Shell LiveWIRE programme and how it has evolved over the years.

Some facts

- Shell LiveWIRE is part of Shell’s ‘Social Investment Programme’ (or CSR), and is actually one of the UK’s longest running youth enterprise schemes offering free business start up information, advice and funding.

- Established in the Aberdeen area in 1982, LiveWIRE was then rolled out across the rest of the UK in 1985 when the contract was awarded to our organisation - the PNE Group (www.pne.org), a not-for-profit local enterprise agency based in Newcastle upon Tyne (formerly known as ‘Project North East’) which began in 1980 as a direct response to the decline of heavy industry.

- The Shell LiveWIRE UK service has obviously changed quite a lot over the past 28yrs, but is now primarily a free online information and advice service for young entrepreneurs (target audience 16-30) offering business guides, videos and award funding through our main website www.shell-livewire.org, a popular advice Discussion Forum (www.shell-livewire.org/forums) and Social Network (www.shell-livewire.org/network).

- We have 2 types of funding available for 16-30yr olds – the annual £10,000 Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award final (see www.shell-livewire.org/news/award2009/ for details) and the monthly £1,000 Shell LiveWIRE Grand Ideas Awards introduced in Jan 2009, specifically for new start ups (see www.shell-livewire.org/awards).

- In addition to the UK scheme, PNE also runs Shell LiveWIRE International, helping to set up and oversee locally-ran projects (each one slightly different) in a further 23 countries around the world (with more to follow) including; Italy, The Netherlands, Nigeria, Argentina, Oman, Libya and Pakistan (see www.shell-livewire.com/home/findprogramme/ for the full list).

Edwin Broni-Mensah (www.GiveMeTap.co.uk) was awarded £1,000 for his business in a special Shell LiveWIRE elevator pitch competition that took place at the NACUE 'Business Not As Usual' conference at UCL London on 27th-28th March.

23 young student entrepreneurs pitched their ideas to Shell LiveWIRE's Stuart Anderson and Paul Lancaster on Saturday 27th, who then had the difficult task of shortlisting 3 to come back and pitch again to the entire audience of conference delegates the next day.

Despite some excellent pitches from all 3 finalists, it was a landslide victory for Edwin, whose GiveMeTap business enables users of a specially-branded GiveMeTap bottle (costing £7) to get free tap water refills from a network of cafes and restaurant owners in the Manchester area (with London soon to follow).

GiveMeTap is a wonderfully simple idea, yet pushes all the right buttons by enabling users to save money (otherwise spent on bottled water), help the environment (by reducing wastage of discarded plastic bottles), and helping the cafe and restaurant owners too by increasing footfall to their premises.

Furthermore, Edwin is passionate about helping others without the same access to high quality, clean water around the world - and has therefore pledged 70% of all his profits to funding independent water projects in regions where it's needed most.

The other 2 fantastic finalists were;

  • Polina Blochina -  providing a safe and convenient way for people to pay for a taxi home, even without cash or cards, via their mobile phones.
  • Tim Yusupov (Zooza.co.uk) - an online retailer selling just one product at a time, on an ever-changing basis, operating a Just In Time (JIT) business model that enables them to sell at a lower price than anywhere else.

Jamie Broadey (Beem) was also invited to deliver his pitch again to the audience as an example of how to do one well for www.beemme.co.uk - the company he works for that enables people to make payments or transfer money to each other using their mobile phone.

For anyone that’s concerned about the future of UK business - spend some time with student entrepreneurs and you’ll worry no more.

Day 1 of the NACUE Business Not As Usual conference at UCL London today (Sat 27th March) was further proof that our universities are full of enthusiastic, passionate young people with great business ideas and the drive to bring them to light.

For anyone that hasn’t heard of them, NACUE (National Consortium of University Entrepreneurs) is a young organisation (launched in early 2009) that ‘supports and represents university enterprise societies across the UK’ and their 2-day ‘Business Not As Usual’ conference was an opportunity to bring them all together with a range of interesting and exciting speakers and panellists from the world of business including an excellent opening Keynote Speech by Julie Meyer (Founder & CEO of Ariadne Capital, First Tuesday, Entrepreneur Country and BBC Online Dragon).

I was there representing Shell LiveWIRE alongside our Project Director Stuart Anderson (www.shell-livewire.org/network/bigstu), hosting a stand, attending workshops / panel discussions, and offering help and advice to anyone needing it whenever we could.

Stu and I were also running a £1,000 elevator pitch competition throughout the day – encouraging young entrepreneurs to tell us about their business ideas with 3 people to be shortlisted and invited to give their pitch again to the entire audience tomorrow (Sunday 28th) who will then help us choose an overall winner.

23 people pitched their ideas to us over the course of the day and despite very little preparation I felt they were all of a very high quality and it was exciting to hear about such innovative and creative businesses from such highly talented young people. Older businesspeople could certainly learn a thing or two from these young entrepreneurs!

I’ll announce the 3 finalists and eventual winner on this blog, my Twitter profile (@lordlancaster) and on the main Shell LiveWIRE website in due course, but regardless of the result I would encourage you all to keep an eye out for the following bright young entrepreneurs, especially if you are an investor / business angel;

·         - Rodrigo Martinez (Fat Student) – a website for students to upload the YouTube style video alongside their CV and profile for prospective employers to see.

·         - Edwin Broni-Mensah (GiveMeTap) – a network of cafes and eateries providing free refills of tap water to anyone carrying a GiveMeTap branded bottle.

·         - Dan Burton – helping students living in London to find safe accommodation provided by letting agencies who are well-trained, responsible and fair in the service they provide.

·         - Deborah Tairo – a social enterprise providing an events planning service using single mothers who are makeup artists, hairdressers, photographers and a business support service for their users.

·         - Magdalena Silva Roldan (HMO Doctor) – providing a new service of consultants, project managers and managers of ‘Houses of Multiple Occupancy (HMO’s)’ helping to undertake refurbishments for landlords and conversions of properties in the UK.

·         - Sheradine Fearon – a life coach for people on benefits, with a disability or from a disadvantaged background helping them to realise their potential.

·         - Amir Javadi – a pprototype of a new research tool that allows the time spent on data analysis to be cut dramatically from 10 days to 6hrs.

·         - Polina Blochina -  providing a safe and convenient way for people to pay for cabs, even without cash or cards.

·         - Artur Majsterek (1eat.co.uk) – a service where for just £10 a year, students can receive up to 50% off the bill at over 300 restaurants, bars and cafes in London and Warwick.

For anyone based in Glasgow (or the surrounding area) you might be interested in this chance to pitch to Shaf Rasul (from BBC's Dragons' Den Online) this week...

Quote:
Do you have a budding idea that could take your business to the next level?
Would you benefit from a Dragon’s expert opinion?

Shaf Rasul, Scotland’s own Dragon is inviting budding entrepreneurs to pitch their unique ideas to him at The Main Event 2010 at the SECC on Thursday 11 March.

Up to three lucky people will have the chance to pitch a new business idea to the Edinburgh-based entrepreneur, who will provide valuable feedback and advice on how to make it work.
Each person will take to the stage and have five minutes to deliver their idea. Shaf will give his expert critique on their proposal.

Once everyone has pitched, the audience will have the chance to participate by using electronic voting pads to select which ‘pitch’ they would give a fictional amount of £80,000 to if they were in Shaf’s shoes, before Shaf delivers his final verdict!

Anyone interested in pitching to Shaf should email their contact details and a brief description of their idea by Tuesday 9 March to Anna McConville - Anna.McConville@qdevents.co.uk

The final ‘pitchers’ will be notified in advance of the event.

More about Shaf Rasul at http://www.bbc.co.uk/dragonsden/dragons/shafrasul.shtml

Shadow Minister for Business and Enterprise Mark Prisk has prioritised the scrapping of Business Link if the Conservatives come into power. Mr Prisk told the Sunday Times that he believes regional Business Links are "failing in their task" and would like to see local enterprise agencies (like the ones listed on www.nfea.com) take a greater role in helping small firms.

See http://www.shell-livewire.org/news/tories-businesslink/ for more details.

Hi everyone,

If you're looking for low-cost marketing methods for your business website, I highly recommend that you make sure that your Social Network profile is as up to date as possible with company description, contact details, logo/photos, keywords) and that you start the free Blog tool that comes with it to post all your latest news, events and info about the products or services you offer.

This is because the Shell LiveWIRE Social Network is extremely well indexed by all the major search engines so anything you post on there stands a good chance of being ranked highly. For example, I posted something on my Blog on 1st Feb titled 'Starting a business in Aberdeen' about my trip up there on 24th Feb and within 5 minutes it was no.2 in the Google search results (see http://www.google.com/search?q=starting+a+business+in+Aberdeen&sourceid= ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&ie=&oe=).

All Shell LiveWIRE members are automatically given a free Social Network profile with very basic info on (name & town/city) when they sign up which they can then login and update with description, logo/photo, contact details, classified ads and events. You can even also add friends, chat with other members online (there's a weekly Livechat every Weds between 2pm-3pm GMT), upload photos and YouTube videos and use the aforementioned blog too.

URLs for Social Network profiles take the form of www.shell-livewire.org/network +/username so for example mine is www.shell-livewire.org/network/lordlancaster

Hope you find this useful and if you've got any questions just ask.

Cheers

Hi everyone,

if you, or anyone you know works for a Third Sector organisation (i.e. a charity, voluntary/community group, not-for-profit, social enterprise) and are/is looking to build, refurbish or redevelop a property or space, check out the PNE Group's new website 'Places for Everyone'...

alt

Places for Everyone (www.placesforeveryone.org) aims to provide third sector organisations with the knowledge and understanding they need in order to successfully deliver a capital development project (new builds, refurbishment or redevelopment of property or spaces).

The project's workshops provide an introduction to the capital development process and the one-to-one consultancy support can help organisations to identify need, plan their project, prepare a feasibility study and ultimately undertake a capital development project.

If you're an expert on this subject you can register your details online, or if you need help and advice you can 'Find an Expert or ask a question.

Places for Everyone has been developed in partnership with PNE Development, Development Trusts Association, Mosedale Gillatt Architects and Pentagon Partnership.

The project is sponsored by One North East's Third Sector Capacity Fund.

The BBC have just sent us the press release for Dragons' Den series 8 and would love to receive some applications from young entrepreneurs via Shell LiveWIRE.

Dragons' Den

alt alt

Entrepreneurs from across the country once again have a chance to make their business dreams come true by appearing on Dragons’ Den. If you’re genuinely seeking investment for your business idea or invention, the BBC would like to hear from you.

Dragons’ Den is a challenging place to pitch, but it’s also a genuine business opportunity to secure investment. In the most recent series, 15 entrepreneurs accepted offers of investment in the Den and plenty more have gone on to find success even without the backing of the Dragons.

In fact, over the previous seven series the Dragons have pledged to invest over 8 million pounds in a wide variety of business ideas and have personally changed the lives of over 70 entrepreneurs. Statistics show that investment opportunity has doubled since the programme began - if you appeared in the den in the last series you had more than a one in five chance of investment.

Download the application form at: www.shell-livewire.org/news/dragonsden

Way back in September 2009, I downloaded a handy guide from MoneySavingExpert.com called 'Boost Your Income: Over 50 ways to bring in extra cash' which I had a brief scan through but have been meaning to look at properly ever since (see www.moneysavingexpert.com/protect/make-money).

Anyway, I finally had a proper read last night and there was a bit about making cash from unwanted CDs, DVDs and games by using a site called Music Magpie (www.musicmagpie.com) which basically lets you type in the barcode number of the item and then it makes you an instant cash offer. You then submit your order and it will send you a FREEPOST label to stick on a box or parcel.

My wife and I started de-cluttering our house last year in readiness for the arrival of our baby boy Jake and I spent a few cold mornings selling some stuff at the local car boot sale, but no-one seemed to want our CDs. Rather than chuck them out, I decided to give Music Magpie a go and am glad I did because it was so easy to use, and we now have a cheque of £35 heading our way in return for a load of old/unwanted CDs and a handful of DVDs.

You need to input a minimum of 5 CDs, DVDs or games up to a maximum of 500, and you don't get much money with prices ranging from 30p per CD up to £3 for a rare / double CD and more for DVDs and games, but it's better than chucking them in the bin and we got a couple of quid for some of them.

Take a look for yourself at: www.musicmagpie.com

Following my earlier post about the Land of Lost Content, Mr Wayne Hemingway has just sent me details of a fantastic new annual event celebrating the best of British culture called 'Vintage at Goodwood'. See details below;

Vintage at Goodwood is a brand new and truly unique annual event which celebrates 5 decades of British Cool. It brings together and celebrates the music, fashion, film, art, dance and design from the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, that has made Britain the world’s creative and cultural hot bed. Vintage will explore this rich cultural history and the extraordinary influence that it has had on the modern world.

Vintage at Goodwood features an inspirational line up of world renowned bands, with performances by the latest contemporary acts who have been inspired by the past, as well as the living legends that have inspired them. There will be DJs, collectors from each decade as well as current artists and brands inspired by Britain's rich creative heritage. Vintage pays homage to the best of British fashion design through a line-up of catwalk shows, hands on creative experiences and the very best purveyors of vintage clothing .The event will explore the musical, design and cultural lineages and offer a glimpse of where we go from here.

Vintage is the brainchild of designers Gerardine Hemingway MBE and Wayne Hemingway MBE of Red or Dead fame in partnership with Lord March, mastermind behind the internationally acclaimed Goodwood Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival.

All aspects of Vintage at Goodwood are curated by a team containing the most experienced, knowledgeable and respected figures within the music, design, film, fashion and entertainment industries. The Vintage curatorial team will bring an unparalleled authenticity and an attention to detail to the Vintage experience.

In the spirit of the fondly remembered and design led, 1951 Festival of Britain, Vintage is a celebration of where we have come from, and where our creative culture is taking us. Vintage is a new ‘Festival of Britain’. The Rock n’ Roll stage may feel like your stepping into a 1950s club, where Rock n’ Roll had its roots, but as well as authentic rockabillys expect to see how the spirit of “52 is embodied in contemporary rock and punk bands. Catwalk shows may feature stunning 40s suits but will also show how the cut, the fabrics, the hair and make-up have influenced collections up to the present day. From Vintage’s 1940s Torch Club, to the 80s “abandoned” Warehouse, and to our “Inspired By...” main stage, Vintage will celebrate our creative past, present and future, in style.

Vintage at Goodwood will inspire you to stay glamorous. If you buy a suit from the world’s biggest Vintage Clothes market, there will be a tailor on our high street to make it “just so”. If you spill down your frock, visit the Vintage Launderette. If you want your hair done in readiness for a great night out in our one of our five on-site clubs, then visit one of the numerous hair salons and pick a style that suits your mood - it’s all part of the fun.

Nestled into a secluded valley, within the famous Goodwood estate in Sussex, Vintage will offer "posh woodland camping that really is posh" for those who want to spend a summer weekend immersed in the very best of British culture. Vintage at Goodwood will be the British holiday of choice for the culturally aware. Come and take a peek through a window to tomorrow, via the past .Experience Vintage at Goodwood on August 13, 14 and 15, 2010. From architecture to fashion, from design to music - the five decades of cool will always offer plenty of sharp clues as to future trends. www.vintageatgoodwood.com

On Friday 27th November 2009, I attended the PNE Group annual lecture with Charles Bean, Deputy Governor of The Bank of England titled 'Is the great recession over?' and here's what he said...

Firstly, he started by giving a bit of background about the causes of the recession. Much of it you will already know from watching the news or reading the paper but it was interesting to hear it from someone in the 'eye of the storm' as it were.

These include;

1. Previous record of great stability leading to complacency and relaxed attitude to investment risk.

2. Low interest rates. The US Federal Reserve kept interest rate low meaning it was much easier to access funds and cheaper to borrow.

3. Savings and investments from around the world, particularly Asia / China encouraged investors to put into riskier investments.

4. Failings in international financial markets such as securitisation, sub-prime mortgages, credit default swaps which in principle looked like would work and make the world economy more robust. However, loans sold through securitisation were still held within the banking system as a way to get around legislation. Fine in principle if just one bank doing this but they were all at it and so merely offloading the bad debts to each other.

5. Some of these new 'products' were very complex and so difficult to value - the natural reaction of investors is therefore to shun them, making them harder to move out of the banking system.

6. Distorted incentives leading to the selling of sub-prime mortgages to people with no means of paying them back.

7. City trader bonuses paid on short term results which inevitably lead to people taking more risks.

8. Belief that the public sector / Government would step in and rescue the banks (which they did)!

But why was there such a drastic impact on the World economy? All the above factors coincided with a fall in GDP (Gross Domestic Product) across the globe by 5% in 2007, followed by extreme caution. in September/October 2008 which led to the global recession.

Basically, he thinks that the current economic downturn is not yet over. The deficit for 2010 will be between 10-12% GDP and we are therefore going to see a negative impact on the Public Sector (cuts in spending / possible job losses / pay freezes).

'Quantitative Easing' (putting more money into our economy to boost spending by buying assets from private sector institutions or UK government bonds aka 'gilts') seems to be having a positive effect. (See http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/monet...e-pamphlet.pdf).

There are signs that the UK and World economy seem to be improving. Charles mentioned that the UK Office for National Statistics had recently showed contraction in the UK economy of 0-3% but said that other indicators and data suggested that it was much healthier which makes it much harder to know for certain. Economy seems to be bumping along the bottom. Either way, the likelihood for 2010 is that the recovery will be slower and more drawn out for this major recession than a 'normal' one.

The depreciation of Sterling should encourage more UK exports (which is a good thing is that's your line of business), but will lead to an increase in export costs.

Overall, there are good signs for the UK economy as a whole, and the Bank of England's November 'Inflation Report' said that we should expect a growth rate in the economy of 2% in 2010, and 4% in 2011. At the time of the lecture in November, press commentary on the report had implied that it was overly optimistic, however Charles Bean said that 4% growth rate is still below pre-downturn economy.

He rounded up by saying that there was still a long way to go, and that we should expect a long and protracted recovery from the deepest recession since the warm although we were in a better position than some would have us believe.

Finally, he closed by saying that "Entrepreneurs are the best people to spot gaps in the market, help the economy and get us out of the recession, NOT politicians"!

So, take heart everyone, our future success lies with you! alt

Sadly, Charles Bean didn't have time to answer any of my questions but I hope that the above info is interesting / of use to some of you. A couple of questions that he did answer from the audience are below;

Question 1: Regarding the collapse of Lehmans Bros., did we not have a similar problem 10yrs ago with the collapse of Barings Bank? Have we not learned anything from that?

Answer 1: Barings was a result of the actions of a single 'Rogue Trader', rather than failings throughout the banking system. However, the collapse of Lehmans had a much greater effect on the economy as the banks were all buying and selling toxic assets from each other and therefore the failing of one impacted all the rest.

Question 2: Are all banks the same, or are some better than others? Should consumers be choosing their banks more strategically rather than merely on the customer service they provide, how nice their branches look inside or short term incentives to bring in their business?

Answer 2: Charles Bean obviously didn't want to seem to favour one bank over another so simply said that all banks have different ways to fund their activities and more expertise in certain markets than others. He recommended shopping around and going to the bank that gives you the best service as they should all be trying their hardest to win your custom and earn back your trust. He also reminder people that there is currently a de factor 100% guarantee for depositers, and advised spreading money around rather than putting all your eggs in one basket.

Saloukee - sculptured art jewellery made in paper

Saloukee

For years, Sarah Louise Kelly (Saloukee) had created traditional jewellery models in paper as preparation for larger works. It was at this point that she realised that she loved working with the sensitive, ephemeral nature of paper, much more than the metals which she had been traditionally trained with.

Many of the pieces include several hundred hand pressed rivets, intricate laser cutting and complex paper folding techniques. Sarah believes it's the patience and precision it takes to make them helps create works of art to be treasured.

Saw this in the recent (BAD News) Business Advisers' News and thought it was interesting...

Only one in ten UK small firms using social networks
Only a tenth of small businesses are using social networks to promote their firm and communicate with customers, according to a recent study by business software firm Sage. Around three-quarters of those that do use social networks are using Facebook, while a third of active social networkers use Twitter and 27% use LinkedIn.

Check out this article on 'NOWISM' from trendwatching.com - one of the most interesting and enlightening bunch of ideas on the future of business / technology I've read this year...

Quote:
October 2009 | As the future is uncertain, and the past is, well, the past, instant-gratification seeking consumers are embracing the ‘now’ with more passion than ever before. And despite this trend’s seemingly ephemeral character, it is rich in solid, applicable trend examples.

alt

In our June 2009 Trend Briefing, we covered FOREVERISM. But even then, we pointed out that the need for everything that is (right) now/current/real-time, is being satisfied in numerous novel ways, with (wait for it) the online world showing the way forward.

Dubbed 'NOWISM', this mega trend has, and will continue to have, a big impact on everything from your corporate culture to customer relationships to product innovation to tactical campaigns. And yet you probably only have a few minutes to spare on it so we’ve done our best to keep this Trend Briefing digestible.

Let’s start with a definition:

Quote:
NOWISM | “Consumers’ ingrained* lust for instant gratification is being satisfied by a host of novel, important (offline and online) real-time products, services and experiences. Consumers are also feverishly contributing to the real-time content avalanche that’s building as we speak. As a result, expect your brand and company to have no choice but to finally mirror and join the ‘now’, in all its splendid chaos, realness and excitement.”
*In the end, just like all our other trends, NOWISM represents a case of consumers jumping on something the moment they actually can. So, the need is never new, the new ways to fulfil it are.

Join our campaign to support the UK's new breed of entrepreneurs and businesses by buying at least one product or service from another Shell LiveWIRE member this year.

With over 100,000 members worldwide, Shell LiveWIRE boasts the biggest online community of young entrepreneurs in the UK, with the majority of users either running their own small business, on the verge of starting up or seriously considering doing so in the future.

Our big idea for The Shell LiveWIRE Exchange is for each member to buy at least one product or service from another user, helping to support their business, the UK economy and the wider Shell LiveWIRE Community all at the same time.

Over the next few months we'll also be doing all we can to encourage members of the public who are keen to support new businesses and looking for unique items that they can't buy anywhere else to join in, particularly in the run up to Christmas 2009.

To do your bit, use this Shell LiveWIRE Social Network to browse profiles of businesses that are already part of the Shell LiveWIRE Community and search for specific products or services that might be on offer (by clicking on click on Social Network > Search at the top of this page).

We would like to encourage everyone that buys a product or service from another Shell LiveWIRE member to leave feedback for them on their Social Network profile and to post a review (with perhaps photos) in our special Discussion Forum thread at http://www.shell-livewire.org/forums/showthread.php?t=23871. Likewise, if you've already done business with another LiveWIRE member in the past we'd love to hear about it here too.

To ensure that all members get the most out of this campaign, please ensure that your Social Network profile contains the most up-to-date information about your business (or idea in progress) including logo/photo, web address, contact details by going to 'Edit Profile Information' (http://www.shell-livewire.org/network/user_editprofile.php).

Also, don't forget to include those all-important Tags/Keywords under the 'Business Information' section as these will help people find you on the site, along with photos or videos of your products or services!

We hope that everyone will gain something from this campaign and look forward to seeing how it all develops over the coming months!
