2010 - Charmaine Kemp (Wheelie Good Mobility)
Charmaine Kemp has coupled personal ambition with academic training and together with enthusiasm and inspiration has produced a fresh approach to the mobility scooter market with her company Wheelie Good Mobility.
She found that few retailers were reconditioning and recycling used mobility scooters. Even fewer were offering them at as reasonable price affordable by the many elderly and disabled people who need them. A mobility scooter is essential for many people's independence, yet can cost around £2500, Charmaine offers the same model for around £1200 and reconditioned ones for around £500, helping people on benefit to enjoy mobility at a fraction of the cost.

She offers around 2000 products online and sends her mail order catalogue to councils, sheltered housing schemes and the general public. Her ethical approach is based on her own value system that includes making charitable donations for house clearance items, an affordable pricing structure, no hidden extras and a level of service which she expects as a consumer herself.
Charmaine graduated in 2008 with a BA in Business Studies, specialising in marketing and consumer behaviour. She was commended her for thorough research from being an unemployed graduate and recognising growth potential, adding: "She cleverly draws together a range of skills to the benefit of her business, including graphic design, catalogue design, marketing plan and the use of county shows. She is extremely resourceful and draws effectively on her contacts and relationships, setting up a think-tank for her business."
Charmaine believes there is a lack of regulation in the market: "The people who buy these products suffer enough without their mobility and there is significant exploitation of government funding or personal savings through inflated prices and finance schemes".
