Website - comments needed

Hi in relation to the thread I posted a few days ago:

http://www.shell-livewire.org/forums...&threadid=8028

I have now put my website up to get some constructive criticism, but as I said in the post above, I am not a designer and have very few skills and have had to do this by myself so although criticism is most welcome, please don't use jargon with me cos I won't have a clue what you mean. Any comments will be greatly appreciated though. Here is the link and thanks in advance:

I think its best to stick to neutral fonts. I dont like that font and you must if you have it. So, there may be a hate-love thing with those fonts. Infact Im having trouble reading it. Make it as easy on the eyes as possible, theres less chance they will close the window then. Apart from that it looks nice and clean.

Thanks for the reply, I have now changed the font to mainly times new roman. The font was the issue I was having, I wasn't too sure on it myself so thanks for that. I have now changed it, look better?

Personally I'd still ditch the Times New Roman font too.

The other problem you had I believe was because you were using a font which doesn't come as Default in Windows (or Linux) so anyone without the font installed will view a different font.

A list of Fonts that comes with Windows is available @ http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/default.aspx

You can also embed Fonts in a webpage (atleast you can for IE, not sure about the rest as it's not something i'd do)
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/...t3/default.htm

Remembering Accessibility, your Visitors might have poor eyesight, different screen resolutions/sizes etc etc... So a "plain" font is better for the content incase they resize the writing.

On your FAQ page, why are you linking to bookkeeping4u? They are your competitors from what I can see!

No need to link, you've already answered the question on your site.

On the contact us page you may want to think about your full contact details on including your address. It gives you that extra level of trust.

The font is astill a slight issue. There are not amny sites that can use Times New Roman and get away with it. Try Verdana or Arial instead.

Some of your images are whoppers! http://cpanel1.mysteryserver.net/~busines/page3.htm the one on this page is over 170KB so this will really slow down users who aren't on broadband and yes, there are plenty about

Maybe put a bit ore information in about you as a person and why you are qualified. This again help builds trust.

Overall not bad at all

Thanks for all those comments, I have tried to change the font now to verdana, and have compressed the pictures - not sure if it has worked though!! The only thing I havent done is the more about me as I need to write this first!!!

I admire all you web designers out there - I have found this SOOO difficult and I'm still not sure it looks even remotely ok.

website design!

I think the site now looks pretty good - you may need to play with the picture, on my browser it looks as if you have compressed it too much... if you get stuck try using MS photo editor which allows you to adjust how much you compress it... trial and error really!

As for the rest, personally i like the menu font... sets it apart from the rest of the page.

How about changing the main text body to bullet points?

I'm by no means an expert, but when i'm browing sites i spend so little time reading passages that I try and build sites which seperate and ration information into 'digestable' chunks of info!!! ;-/

Overall you mustn't worry - you will inevitably keep tinkering with it until you are happy with it... its pretty good now!

Good luck!

Dave

ncassidy,

The facelift Brett has done looks slick and professional - I'd grab it with both hands! And all he has done is tweaked...

Regards,
Richard

I agree. Your site was good for a non-web designer but take Brett up on this offer...

Nice one Brett!
