I'm planning to set up a web development company..i'm now going thoug the exciting but grueling stage of picking a name. I have a few ideas but dont know about the legalaties of choosing a company name i.e. tradmarks and copyrights...etc. Any advice woud be welcomed.

Are you definately starting off as a company? If you're just starting out you may want to consider becoming a sole trader as it is more straight forward in terms of running the business and the paperwork. You could always incorporate in a year or two depending on your circumstances in the future.

You should find this page from the BusinessLink website interesting.

A name cannot be copywrited so you don't have to worry about this, to check if it's a trademark you can search online at .

And to make sure no one else is using the name for a Limited Company you can search the records at Companies House

Your local business link advisor should be able to help you.

All the best
