Retail website startup
Guys
I am in the concept stages of starting a retail website up but am having a mental block with the concept of coordinating design with site hosting. I have been told any good deisgn agency would organise hosting for me, but I would want that to be on my terms as I need to have access to the site from my home office and check out the log files and update prices, products etc. Can anyone offer any advice on how this sort of thing should should happen? Thanks |

Hi Gino. Yes, your web design company can recommend a hosting company, but it is better to find one yourself. Look for a hosting company that has the features your site site needs. (i.e. PHP, ASP, mySQL, FrontPage....etc)
As for checking your website stats, most good hosting companies will include this in there hosting deals and many of them will be accessable through a normal browser. You may also want to look into a "Webmail" type of service offered with your hosting. Basically, its where you can check, send and receive your emails through any browser, from anywhere, on any PC. Regarding updating products and pricing, this should be done by your web design company. Simply inform them that you need to update your shop details yourself, and they will provide this for you. Good luck with your site. Regards

Hosting
I agree and think you need to find a webhosting company yourself and ask your design team to post the website onto your host package. That way you have total control.

Hosting plays a big part in your internet business so you should seek advice from people local to you. Please visit our web site at http://www.webprojectuk.com. If you decide to go with another company please make sure you ask the right questions. I.e what you will get, if you will have to pay extra for support and if you are tied to that hosting plan. happy hosting from admir |

Re: hosting!
I totally agree that hosting is one of the most important part of any web-business but disagree with the fact that;

Good advice is important, but as this forum shows, good advice can be sought from anywhere. Some of the best hosting companies will certainly not be local to you. Recommendations and experiences of others is invaluable. |

Hi ya
We use 1and1 for our e-shop, but to tell you the truth we were not empressed with the design of the e-shop that they can offer, it's very simple, very boring, very basic but they offer good management software. We had to do a lot of work by upgrading to developors package and my hubby has spent loads of time having to rescript html with php to make it work together. If that makes any sense. I'm no web developer but if you have the patience then OK. |

I would recommend one and one linux hosting and then getting someone to build the system for you.
When we build systems for clients we usually recommend hosting or order it for them and pass it over at the end of a project. I would definately recommend having control of your hosting yourself for a bigger site. |

Ooops, My date icon is all over the place at the top, I've tried clicking on recent threads but it is showing previous years and months are not in order at the top and then I'll see the most recent threads after 6 entries.
Thanks Martin for spotting that. I'll be extra careful next time |
