email approach

Hello - I am trying to cost out advertising my first retail business and I'm not sure how. I have got the media side sorted (press releases, leaflets etc) but I was interested in finding out more about email advertising. Where can I find the email addresses of potential customers (I am very clear who they are) without going against the date protection act etc? And how much do these cost? Thanks! Jb

Hi Jenny,

Recent Government legislation has made it illegal to 'spam' potential customers with e-mail advertising. You now need to have permission from potential customers to send them such e-mails.

Further information on The Directive on Privacy and Electronic Communications (2002/58/EC) can be found at:

It is possible to rent lists from list brokers of e-mail addresses - as long as the addressee has "opted in" for their name to rented. Make sure the broker provides lists carefully matched to your target customer base.
