Public liability insurance for a company making beauty products

I've just got off the phone to the insurance firm my accountant recommended who could "cover me no probs!" (my accountants words). However they have said covering me would be a "problem" but have not outlined the actual problem.

Apparently making and selling natural beauty products is "unusual" and I "may stuggle to get cover".

I also contacted a few brokers that were mentioned on earlier threads (I did a quick search). Out of the ones that answered I was told they wouldn't be able to offer me cover.

Does anyone (possibly working within the beauty industry?!) know of any companies that do offer cover? I did a quick internet search too, but by the time I got to the 7th company my computer majorly slowed down

Making and selling natural beauty products isn't unusual at all...

Federation of Holistic Therapists. www.fht.org.uk offer cover for this sort of thing. You may need to be NVQ Level 2+ qualified and/or a member to get cover though.

I've e-mailed them my enquiry, I am actually doing a beauty therapist course so lets hope they can cover me

If you are doing a beauty therapist course you tutor should be able to advise you.

Have you signed up to the top leading mag Professional beauty?
There is a wealth of knowledge with this magazine, any serious beauty professional should subscribe.

Also have you checked out business link, they will give you all the laws and regulations information.

I've contacted all the recommend companies as well the companies listed on other posts but I'm having no joy (infact I'm getting too emotional over it I've just spent 1/2 hour crying).

One company turned around and said "you're business is considered a high risk, that could be why you're having problems getting cover". They only said this after I asked for an answer to why I wasn't having much luck.

How can I reduce the risk factor? I'm having all the products safety assessed to be in line with EU/UK laws what else can I do?! can anyone advise me? Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Oh dont stress about it too much!
We all come up againist barriers through our business and personal lives.
Dont worry i'm sure a few of the shell members will be able to point you in the right direction.
Have you spoke to anyone at business link?
Maybe they can put you in contact with the right people.

Check out the beauty guild website, if you become a member they offer insurance. If you don't want to become a member they might point you in the right direction but your line of business is certainly not unusual!!

If I recall correctly, FHT will only insure you for this kind of thing once you've completed the NVQ2.

Why not ask them how and where you can obtain insurance if they won't provide it?

Not going to be much help here but I know someone who used to have a business that sold natural beauty products but had to close due to a whole load of new regulations that came in which made it too expensive for her, not sure if it was to do with insurance but I can contact her if you like and find out if she has insurance and who it was with.

yeap, i can imagine the cost occuring with the safety assessment-one company quoted me £175.00 per product!

I contacted all the relavant bodies so I'm up to date with law changes and thats all under control-its the insurance causing issues
