Snow, snow go away?

The snow seems to putting business to a stand still, no doubt it has probably effected you in some way.

How can we, as a collective of great business minds, formulate a solution so that work and business does not come to a stand still when a bit of frozen water hits the earth? Or is just the Great British mindset to not go into work when the snow falls?

We seem to have entered a collective worried mother mind set of "snow = stay at home" rather than just dealing with it.

I appreciate in places there is a lot of it, but in many areas the roads are pretty clear, and its just local streets than need a bit of a shovel out but everyone seems to be too scared to clear their own street following the press hysteria last year about being sued for doing it. Even the local shop keepers here dont seem to understand that if they clear the bit outside their shop, then the whole town will be clear within a few hours so they might actually get some customers!

Its also not that hard to drive safely on snow and ice in a normal car so long as you follow the basics of second gear, loads of clutch and driving with anticipation and not the brake pedal. Seems to be a lost art.

I can't say we've had much in Wiltshire - certainly not as much as northern cities - however we have a delivery tomorrow and whilst the main roads are clear this is to a location that doesn't sound easily accessible. Nonetheless it's got to be done, so we will be giving it our best shot tomorrow morning!

I do find it odd that in britain we seem to really struggle when a bit of snow falls. I guess we are only used to cloud and rain!

Indeed. We've had an order delayed due to courier's not collecting (not that that's anything new!!)

Very quiet here. Calls through our telephone answering service across all our clients were down 22% yesterday (Thursday) compared to Thursday last week. The volumes are normally fairly constant so that's a big drop. Lets hope we start to get back to normal next week.

Have to say we're experience some difficulties as well.. all of our online sales are down... we are assuming this is due to the weather, people not wanting to take the risk with courier services.

Weve hardly had any snow so no real problems. Hopefully it will stay that way

The news makes me laugh, you would think it was the middle of summer and we had snow. It's winter, it snows. Not really news is it, happens this time every year.

I drove to centre parcs in the worst of it and back again in the same conditions and drive properly, take your time and it's fine. There was the odd idiot who thought this meant the fast lane had been left clear purely for them to go flat out, but they soon paid for their stupidity. It's just a shame when people drive like idiots in this weather and hurt other people.

We're actually getting more work because so many staff are off because of the snow.

IMO it's worse than it was a few years ago because every time there is 2 inches, all the schools close and that means lots of parents stuck with the kids at home. It's not so much the snow which is closing the schools but the health and safety risk of having kids in the snow which closes them.

So...any solutions? My suggestion is the government take control of the snow, not the local councils, that why nothing gets gritted properly and places like kent come to a stand still.

It's back again! Pretty awful time to return with it being this close to Christmas, finding it very hard to send packages cross country.
