Online Groups

This is my first request here, so I do hope you can help me out.

I'm getting together a small group of people online and need to set up a private group where we can discuss topics, chat with eachother, post links and get a little 'resource' section going.

I had a look over Google Groups for this, but it seems very limited and isn't as 'nice' as what I was hoping for.

Is there anything similar, but with more capabilities (and free) out there?

phpBB should be suitable
You can then check and verify memberships

Will have a look into that too We're also seeing how Facebook groups works out as well. So many options, so little time!
