Just out of interest... Printers and designers alike
Why do web designers/printers etc on here say email me for a quote when someone asks for one in the thread? Surely it would be quicker and easier just to tell them in the thread or email them the quote or is there an actual reason?

a) maybe the designer can offer a super secret super good price not available to the rest of us mere mortals....
b) to stop the thread turning into an open bidding war with each person trying to better the previous deal. c) their prices are poo and they are ashamed to say them out loud :-) i think its probably B though |

It's a mixture of B and the fact that 99.9% of the the time there is never enough information in the request to formulate an accurate quote from.

I don't think just posting a price on the lines of "I want a website like this, how much?" is very professional, also just not possible to account for everything the person is after, trust me it will come and bite you back in the bottom later on!! Brett

Its all about not being undercut.
If someone posts a thread asking for a price for example, 5,000 A5 Leaflets. If I posted a price for 76.00 - this would allow my competitors to see my price. However If I emailed the customer the quote no one would know the price therefore you would try to beat my price. Im quite happy to be open about my price and post them on the thread for all to see. Hope this answers your question. Kind regards Andi McCann

Asking a client to email me (rather than me email them) indicates serious intent on their part. There's far too many tyre-kickers around for me to waste valuable time on. I'm sure many other professionals here will agree.
Besides, much of our terms of service are marked 'commercial in confidence' - mine are.

Reasons
It's not necessarily about hiding prices, as mine are clear to see for all at www.trulyace.com/prices.html and have been for years.
To me if I asked someone to email me it would be about assessing serious intent as mentoned by Eagle....ie about pre-qualifying leads. I might also do that if the information provided in the post wasn't comprehensive enough to allow a quotation - which is usually isn't. Posters often ask for a quote without providing sufficient information to allow one to be accurate and also then fail to provide an email address so that the quote may be sent to them or further dialogue that will lead to an accurate quotation.
