You will need to pay import duty and VAT on your items from countries outside the EU, but the percentage you pay depends on the goods.
you will need to contact HM Revenue and Customs to obtain a 'commodity code' which is the code of the type of goods you are importing and they will let you know the percentage you will be charge. make sure you don't rush importing goods, make sure you get a written agreement so each party knows exactly what they responsible for each step of the way etc... take alook at the business link website, lots of good info on their about importing.

I know a company who import from Africa and they do not pay the same import charges as it is something to do with fair trade.
Take the time to speak to customs and excise about this and as said above find out your correct code. |

Try the customs site:
http://www.uktradeinfo.com/ Dont trust advice on forums. Customs are not to be messed with.

I think some countries outside the EU that we are trying to encourage trade relations with have tax relief - not sure which these countries are would like to know. Also for some countries and types of items you will need an import licence (takes 48 hrs to get i think) and you will need a VAT number or a temporary VAT number. I really dont think quota problems will appy to the type of good you importing but might be best to find out.
The key is definitely getting everything right before things come in else you will be charged storage for your good whilst you will not be allowed to move them. Regarding moneyman saying dont mess with customs it is true just because if you get it wrong it can turn into a very expensive experience and an extremely frustrating one. |

Spoke with HM Customs... they were REALLY helpful. Didnt realise so much would have to be arranged for such a small parcel to be coming in from Africa... but hey, ho.... its all been explained to me now.
Nobody should be concerned with customs on bringing goods into the country... they were really helpful.

keep on their good side. yes they can help. but if they ever catch you making a mistake or doing anything wrong such as misdescribing anything, watch it. thewy have more powers than the police, dont need warrants and are almost above the law.
