Name Server help
In the past, using my domain registrar account screen, I have been able to enter my webspace providers name server information, like ns1.acmeweb.com
I am now renting my own dedicated server that includes the DirectAdmin GUI. So yesterday I created a reseller account using one of my domains; and it has created a name server for me that shares the same name. As an example www.mydomain.com has a name server of ns1.mydomain.com So using my domain registrar account, I have typed in my new name server details, but it says "Nameserver ns1.mydomain.com doesn't exists in the registry" The name server was created about 20 hours ago. Do I just need to wait, or is there something else I should be doing? Thank you in advance. |

It can take up to 48 hours to create the appropriate name server records at the registry. I use eNom for mine and they get done very quickly but not all registrars are the same...

Well the domain registrar you used should provide a tool for you to check. Alternatively just ping the name server record until you get the appropriate IP.
**edit** That was post 2,000. Do I get a prize now?

How does it work though.
As under my domain registrar, I am unable to set a name server for mydomain.com as it does not exist. Yet, my server created a name server called ns1.mydomain.com I am confused, do DNS servers register themselves with other servers? My domain registrar and server provider are different companies. * Congratulations on your post count * I am not witty enough to think of a prize, I will leave that to other members

Right the stages at eNom are like so (NB: your domain registrar may be different.
1) Register domain. Has to be a net, org or com domain for use as a nameserver) 2) Create the name server records and point them to the relevant IPs 3) Update the domain record to point at the new name servers. Creating the name server on your server alone won't work as you have to set the name server records and IP addresses with our registrar too. I'll probably get a kick in the teeth as the prize
