Hi Kris. It is a good idea, as long you have enough relevant information on there and its being updated regulary. You should also consider having a forum where local user can post there views, news and comments.

Kris...have a look at: http://www.invisionboard.com/ which is the one we use ourselves. You will need a host capable of PHP and mySQL (any Linux/ Unix based host will have this). To see our forum, see: http://www.forums.designrweb.co.uk/ This is also free to download.

Re: new business idea...

Sounds like a good idea, Kris - just remember, boring people use the web too! So don't forget to include fascinating 'community' events, from folk festivals to council run events to discussion forums and school / religious events etc.... It's worth getting in touch with the council as there may be money stashed for publicity etc that could certainly pay for your bread and butter. Have you spoken to any one else who has actually worked on a 'local' website? Try Leedsnet, a company based in the Host Media Centre in Leeds. I'm not sure if this is exactly what they do, but they may be able to help.

Hi, I was after a good message board for my site and I come across this site with free forums - www.phpbb.com

I think your idea is good and I've seen people have an idea like that and now they're become some huge websites with profitable services, check out www.girlracer.co.uk

Once you offer interesting content with regular changes, this will encourage visitors back. Businesses in the area would offer to pay for advertising on the site or ask to sell their products and services via the site.

Give it a go and remember, never stop promoting your website!

Ive been working with phpBB and Invision Board for a long time, hopefully these basic guides can be of some use to you!!

phpBB: A good, mediumly-featured piece of software. Free and intuitive to setup and use. Free skins and mods available. The administration panel can be a bit difficult to get your head around when you first see it, but becomes logical after a while. With a few modifications the board becomes very usable (the attachments mod is one i particularly like)...

Invision Board: I think this is bloatware, there are too many features that can slow down page loading times. Has the same basic features as phpBB though has some of the phpBB mods installed by default (attachments etc.)

I prefer phpBB, a friend prefers Invision Board, try out the demos of both of them and see what best suits your needs
