I'm about to purchase a .com domain for a company i'm setting up, and was wondering which is the best way to do this. I'd like a reputable comapny that will allow cgi scripts and an average amount of web space/traffic. Any ideas on which companies to go for, and what the likely cost would be?

Pete,
When you first register a domain name the cost covers securing that name for YOU. Once done you can use that name with ANY ISP of yuor choice. You may be well aware of this and looking for the best deal from an ISP who, as you identify offer different services.

BT allow you to create your own site, 20mb max I think, with your own name - FREE - assuming you have a BT line and are using BT Openworld (FREE and reduced price on Internet access)

Hello PDJ......you could try www.123-reg.co.uk or www.ukreg.com Both have similar prices and both will issue you with a control panel to control your domain name.

As you are seeking a site for business, I would recommend some paid for hosting (rather then free) and most good hosts will allow CGI access, control panel....etc.

Once you have registered a domain name, you then need the "DNS Servers" from your hosting company. All you need to do is log into your control panel and change the domains DNS enteries to that given to you by your hosts. (Normally take between 24-48 hours for your site to become live)

try www.clara.net and go for the SOHO package (Small Office, Home Office). I've found them very good and when I had problems uploading my site their customer services was excellent.

p.s. Just a word of warning, some domain reg companies keep a record of domain names that you have been looking at i.e. if I wanted to reg say www.haveaniceday.com and I didn't the company would and I would loose the name. It happend to me. Try www.a-q.co.uk they don't keep tabs on your searches.

The most important thing to work out here is what you need it to support, how fast you want it and how reliable. If you're not bothered and its just a brochure site, go for some freespace. If its commercial space you're looking for - goto a company who specialise and have good servers. If you need extra services like Frontpage Extensions or CGI make sure you're getting these upfront as many companys will charge you after you're in a contract.
