What do people think of my new website?

Hi everyone

I have been an avid reader of the forum for ages and thought I would post and see what people think of my new website. Any comments or suggestions are very welcome.
It's www.lilacstripe.com

Thanks in advance!

Harriet

I like it, looks very good and professional looking. I also like the way you can hover over the types of clothing to click on a particular piece
You could do however with some information on the front page about you and what you offer plus you could do with an About page to tell customers about yourself and what you offer

hi

my first impressions are as follows.

Like the site a lot and looks professional.
Personally I see no need for the intro, I think your main page is strong enough without the need for an intro.
There are too many rollover pictures that caused me to scroll. I would have liked to see the main page fitted into the top only. Perhaps keeping only one line of rollover pictures and making them slughtly smaller. (also somoen new to the site may not know to rollover the products - so you might want to indicate that)
just my opinions
apart from that very smart

Yeah I like it, loos nice and well laid out. I like the mouse over aspect on the products - good touch.

Is that you modelling the gear then Harriet?

Thanks for the comments

I have got the flash intro as a test at the mo and I will see how many people skip it. I really wanted the rollover pictures so I am happy how they turned out.
Not me modelling - it's my best friend and my cousin - I was doing the photography!

Hi Harriet, I like the site, as others have said clear, professional looking and suits the products, great name as well. Have to agree with the others, your intro did absolutely nothing for me apart from tell me the name of the site which I already know and make me impatient ...... in normal circumstances might have made me close the window ...to be honest I don't think you need to wait for stats about how many people skip it, I could confidently predict it now!! My other concern is that I'm guessing you have had / will have problems with search engine positioning as the site isn't optimised at all, and all the flash, although looks good, is a big no no in the eyes of search engine optimisation.

Thanks for your comments DeterminedOne, I think I will def get rid of the flash intro - have noticed that less and less sites have them recently.

As for search engine optimisation I was only thinking about that today - my web designer said he was taking care of that but obviously hasn't done a great job!! I'm not very au fait with how to get good search engine results - have you got any tips that I can confront my web man with?!

Thankyou!!

Thanks so much Nikita! I designed the colour scheme and the logo and did the photography. A local guy who lectures at the college near me put it together, I am so happy how it turned out!

Hi Harriet, you can get lots of tips from this forum on SEO but as a starter you need to:
1) Select your keywords ie. 10 words that people are most likely to search for when looking for your products
2) Add a title and meta description to every page using as many keywords as possible in the text (but not simply listing them)
3) Add meta keywords to every page
4) Add alt tags to all your images - this is meant to be a description of the image but I would just make up a few keyword intensive sentences and apply them to all your images
5)You really need some more text on your homepage, seeing as the user needs to scroll down anyway you might as well add some wordy stuff under the images
6) Create a sitemap
7) Create an FAQs page - because very wordy and easy to get lots of keywords in

....I'll leave you with that for the time being!!

http://www.spannerworks.com/seotoolkit/ is a great site that offers free "checker" tools to see how well your site will fare in the search engines. The best way to use it is to find a competitor sites that does well in the search engines and use the tools to check their site and yours and compare the differences..

Hope that helps,
Laura

new osCommerce site - looks Great!

Hi Harriet,

An excellent start for a new osCommerce site, it looks good and original which goes to prove all those wrong who state osCommerce sites "all look the same". Your developer/designer has done a great job.

Something else I liked about your site was the easy access you have to delivery details and your own contact details, so many others fail to provide this...

However, to succeed long term you need to be seen as Laura has already correctly pointed out. Much of the SEO (page titles, meta tags, etc) can be added automatically using osCommerce contributions available free from:
http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions

There is one major issue with your website - its hosted in America, for cheapness no doubt, this is a big NO NO. As you are using a .com domain and are hosting in America search engines will not relate your products as UK origin! Therefore you will find it difficult to get your site listed in the natural UK search results. Read more here: http://www.uk-web-hosting-directory.org/

I wish you best of luck with your web site

Hi Dave

Thanks for your comments, I am glad you like the site. I'm really happy with the work the web designer has done on the site but he hosts all the sites he looks after in America so I'm not sure he'd be the best person to host it after all...

Would anyone be able to tell me how easy it is to transfer my site from one person's servers to another?

Thanks
