Software Developer Required

Hi Everyone

I was wondering if there were any software developers out there that could help me - in fact I am not sure if it is even a software developer that I need!

Basically I want to develop a template that I can send out to clients and they can fill in easily on their computer.

I would have to be able to change the templates easily to create background images and set boxes which users can put information into. These boxes would have to be fixed in size, position, font etc.

The user would have to be able to type and import images into these boxes and position the images in what ever position they want in the box.

Once templates are completed I am going to need to combine several of them together into one document.

Anyone interested in taking this on?? If so please email me at fchouse@hotmail.com

Thanks

Fran

Have a look at Microsoft InfoPath.

Which has built-in capabilites to email back the results.

(edit)

Although, I'm not sure about this bit.

Or have a look at Microsoft word and create a template using that.

Yeah James, I was thinking the same, but a developer maybe required for vba.

Plus, the question doesn't make the most amount of sense lol... Joining together for example? .. How, one on top of another or joined into a book side by side?

The clearer you can be for the developer the more likely you will get the product you want.

Plus so many people do not know how to use microsoft word beyond writing a letter.

Oh yeah i didn't spot that bit - read the rest of the post bar the last paragraph.
Fran have to agree with martin - you need to put a more detailed spec together. If possible also make some examples of what you are trying to acheive so the developer can visualise what you require.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the feedback

Dont worry I will put together more of a spec and explain better, I was not asking for a solution yet, I was ask for someone who would be interested in working on such a project. Then I will explain to that person full details of the project and what it needs to achieve...

I think if the developer understood what the application was then a lot of the rest would become clear.

So either of you interested?

Fran

Adobe Acrobat could probably achieve all of that for you, it allows forms to be created and filled in and you can stitch together different pages etc.. I also believe it has the email response stuff built in.

Might be worth investigating into it.

SBar - But this part is a problem, which I don't think Acrobat can handle.

I've just been looking through my control gallery but can't find anything for this. (closest is a "rich text box" funnily)

Programming is kind of an art, some artists use a brushes, others use pencils... Some work with metal, others with paper.

In the same respect programming languages lend themselves as better suited to certain projects over others. The right tool for the job in other words.

Which is why I'm hesitant about putting my name forward.

Ah yes sorry I skimmed over the post and missed that requirement!

Another solution could be a webpage that you give your clients a link to, I'm sure there are plenty of solutions in that domain from JavaScript based ones to Flash (though this imposes a software requirement using Adobe or Word would also)

So this is as complicated as I feared it may be!!

Do any of you know a way of just locking position size and font of text/image boxes in word or popwerpoint?? Not idea but could be better than nothing at this stage!

Thanks for all your help so far by the way everyone!

Hi Fran,
Sorry i won't be able to take this on at the moment. I'm booked up for the next for months and really can't take any more work on at the moment unless your happy to wait.
As Sbar said a web page type of solution is possible - Not just flash or javascript though but asp.net and Java applet - both of which wouldn't require the user to have anything specific apart from a suitable web browser.

Martin - what language was you looking at the controls for? In .NET and VB6 (and j2EE if my memory serves me right) there are tons of controls that could help acheive this solution.

Hi Fran,

I've just sent you an email. We have a very flexible management system which may work with your requirements but we would need more details of your exact requirements.

James,

TBH I was looking at the bigger picture, but if you know of a control(s) that can do this I'll purchase it right now.

This is basically (but more than) WYSIWYG, and I have controls (to a limited degree) for this but I don't believe that is what's required.

You would need to write the control to allow the ower to design forms and handle the data, and if thats the case I don't have the time for the project with current works and upcoming works in the pipeline.

(Basically the above is MS InfoPath / Acrobat, which as we found out does not allow end user control of images to the degree required ever. - Maybe design an ActiveX control for it?)

As I tried saying before, I believe this might be perfect for another language or AJAX based webpage which is not an area I'm proficient.

But then again, maybe I'm reading to much into this!

I think a possible nice little solution could be an a webform or windows form that creates dynamic text boxes etc - could be specified in a simple xml file with text length and font etc.
The images can be tackled with a fileupload (if web form) box, and some sort of dynamic image tags - not 100% sure how you would drag the image around though
if it's win forms though then just use a open file box, picture box, etc and it'd be easily done.

You've just described Infopath, which is rendered from XML files. (And offers alot more functionality.)

I can't see someone filling in a XML file each time (For you and me, yeah, but someone looking for a solution...not so sure)

Alot of the problem with this discussion could easily be solved by an explanation for the need of moving images around tho.

I've found myself reading the first post a few times now trying to work out exactly whats required.
