cis scheme + vat

i wonder if anyone can help me what it is 2 months ago i started trading as an electrical contractor and i registered for vat and so far when i have done work for clients i have sent them an invoice for the gross amount plus vat (this is me trading as the main contractor)
however another company in the construction industry has asked me to carry out some sub contract work for them and as such they require my cis status, i have phoned the tax office and they dont seem to be able to advise me, in the past i have worked cis 4 but this would meen i could only invoice the client for the net amount so how would i add my vat to this or should i be another type of cis?

any help much appreciated
