There are a lot web guys on this site so you shouldn't have a problem. I would advise when getting a site built to try and focus your plans for it as much as possible. Its such a big deal in the design world that I might even write a blog post about it tomorrow.
I know I wouldn't have gotten my website to look as good as it does at all at all if it was not for getting a really concise brief. I don't mean short necessarily. Sometimes what a good thing to do is to look at what you would get designed if you had £20 k to spend. If you went with this company http://www.bluhalo.com/ they'd charge you at least 10k. At least, they don't even consider working on stuff at under 10 k. Then work backwards. Also, it might be an idea to get a user experience guy in to work with your designer. You don't need to pay this chap a lot, just get someone that knows how to use a website more than they know their own face. Ask what they think when they see the designs, "No, move that to above the fold, no make that smaller, you need a link here" bla bla bla, it really really helps sometimes. Anyway basically what I am saying is that you are unlikely to get the best deal by just asking for "ten page website" or something like that. The designer wont be happy either as they prefer working within guidelines rather than on blank canvas "just get me a great site, i love shiney buttons and it would be great if there was a video on the homepage" type brief. Then again, Degrafik have a nice site and they offer incredibly competitive packages. I guess I am too big a fan of blue sky thinking and I also believe that if you don't spend a few bucks on your web page you ain't gonna get much bang.
