HTML5 is the future - so go there!
Hi ceasar, to create a new YouTube is ambitious (see what Vimeo are doing).
Really, the answer to your question(s) is that YouTube is a bespoke website which is built on original code and technology. The only way to know what it contains is to work for YouTube but even then it's likely that you would only have access to certain parts of the site. The future of online video is going to be built using what's known as HTML5 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML5) so if you want to create something to rival YouTube, that's where you should be looking. It's still fairly new technology so at least you have a chance of making something truly original!

To build a video upload site similar to youtube is not difficult, there are lots of scripts out there, as well as CMS plugins that will do this. Wont be the same, but will be similar functions, layout etc...
But, the 'scale' of youtube, is not so much down to the script, but the server setup they have which is IMMENSE... I used to run a video streaming site, specifically for Martial Arts only so a very restrictive niche market. I cant imagine the bandwidth and hosting that youtube have for the amount of videos and simultaneous users they have on their site...must cost an absolute fortune... Best way to do things is to start small and niche. Or setup different to youtube... SocialCam is a good example of this, not laid out like youtube at all, built solely for integration with facebook and doing well with it. Income generation is all hit and miss though, maybe they will get investment, maybe they will get bought out, maybe they wont... in which case, as a free service to users, they have to bring the cash in somewhere else...! ClipShare is a good vid script, although as standard its FLV only so no good for apple devices. You can upgrade it to work with mp4, h264 which is apple friendly. You can also upgrade it to run on lighttpd for in video seeking (no need to wait for full video rendering) which is essential for a video site... Or, have a look at Wordpress, there are a number of themes built for video sites. All the best with the project. |
