I am planning to conduct a number of focus groups for a magazine I am producing aimed at young people. In order to entice young people to attend I am trying to get a third party to sponsor the event. In return the 3rd party could promote their own products or services at the focus group.

I am imagine companies such as Nike and other firms that market goods to the relevant market would be best to approach.

What would be the best way of approaching companies in order to achieve my aim.

Thanks

You will need to contact their PR or Marketing Department in a way which gets their attention. If it's a telephone call get clear about your first words and how they will engage their interest; if it's in writing make the introduction dynamic.

Sponsorship still requires the same outcomes for a business as any other type of marketing,ie favourable exposure to the right target audiences in sufficient quantity. With this in mind you will need to explain exactly what a sponsor will get for their money, ie how big an audience, what type of exposure, what they can get from your offer that is unique, etc.

Also people like Nike will be inundated, although that dosen't mean you shoudn't try, but how about local radio, mobile phone companies, etc?
