Hi,

The first things you will need to do are your market research and to write a business plan. You need to prove that there is a genuine need for your business and that your plans are financially viable. A business plan will be essential when applying for funding, as the vast majority of organisations will ask to see one.

The availability of funding differs from region to region and from project to project. It will be best to seek advice and information from your local business support organisation.

Try the most relevant of the following:

Business Link (England)
www.businesslink.gov.uk

Business Connect (Wales)
www.businessconnect.org.uk

Business Gateway (Scotland)
www.bgateway.com

Invest Northern Ireland
www.investni.com

The Economic Development department at your local council (http://www.oultwood.com/) may also be a good source of information about grants and loans. In addition, local enterprise agencies (http://www.nfea.com/index.htm?page=find_lea.htm) and the Prince's Trust (http://www.princes-trust.org.uk/) may also be able to help.

If you are aged 16-30 and register online with Shell LiveWIRE at http://www.shell-livewire.org/cgi-bin/register.pl (this is different from registering for the Mentor system), you will be able to download two booklets - 'Market Research for the First Time' and 'Writing your First Business Plan'. You will also gain access to all the information within the Be Your Own Boss section of the site. You will find the section on Finance and Funding of particular interest.

I'd also recommend taking a look at two guides from Business Link and the Inland Revenue:
