The first thing to do is your research. You need to prove that there is a need for your business (often this can be done by designing and handing out a questionnaire, then truthfully analysing the results); you need to identify who and where your customers are; you need to identify your competition; you need to come up with a unique selling point that will differentiate your business from others in the same field, etc.
On completion of your research you can then develop your business plan? A thorough, well-researched business plan is often the key to securing financial assistance, and the majority of business support organisations will ask to see one before deciding whether or not to provide you with a grant/loan.
The availability of funding differs from region to region and from project to project. It will be best to seek advice and information from your local business support organisation.
Try the most relevant of the following:
Business Link (England)
Business Connect (Wales)
Business Gateway (Scotland)
Invest Northern Ireland
The Economic Development department at your local council (http://www.oultwood.com/) may also be a good source of information about grants and loans, and will also have details of available subsidised workspace. In addition, local enterprise agencies (http://www.nfea.com/index.htm?page=find_lea.htm) and the Prince's Trust (http://www.princes-trust.org.uk/) may also be able to help.
If you register online with Shell LiveWIRE at http://www.shell-livewire.org/cgi-bin/register.pl (this is different to registering for the Mentor System), you will be able to access a great deal of relevant information within the Be Your Own Boss section, including articles on Finance and Funding.
