I'm in the process of writing a business plan to start a retail company with my brother. I have already registered with Shell-Livewire and they have already been good enough to put me on a course in January but I'm wondering at what point should I get in contact with a specialist at Business Link regarding our idea.

We've made some good ground on the business plan and are pretty clear on the general ideas of services we'd be providing and goods we'd be selling..... so what does everyone think?

I don't want to seem like I'm wasting their time!

If you have already registered with Shell LiveWIRE you should have the details of a Local Co-ordinator. They should be able to advise you as to the most appropriate stage to contact Business Link.

Hi and Good Luck by the way.........

I got in touch with Biz Link before i had started my Biz,they also put me in touch with Prince's Trust who were fab!Had an app got loads of good advice and made loads of contacts also got funding from Prince's Trust........I found that the earlier you contact them the more advice they can give before you submit your biz plan.

Hope all goes well......Let us know how you get on...

What I find is that no matter where you are in your business, Business Link is benefical at any stage. (Before, during and after you business is running) Sounds like you have grasped the basics, but BL should be able to advise you on the legal side of things (Vat, Tax, Rent, Rates...etc).

You really shouldn't worry about wasting there time. It's a service they provide. We have had meeting with BL in the past that had lasted over 2 hours, yet at other times, it's barely been 10 mins.

If you are looking at producing a website for your retailers (promotional or a full ecommerce/ shopping site) we should be able to help you.

Good luck with your venture

Thanks to all so far for the replies.

We will most definitely be producing a web site for our venture which will include online sales. Will contact you nearer the time.

I would contact any of the business organisations as soon as possible as they are always willing to provide you with help no matter where you are with your business idea.

I found both Business Link and The Prince's Trust really helpful and I think you should contact them straightaway. Also, contact your local business advisers as they are always helpful.

Pardon my ignorance, but is registering with Shell-Livewire the same as registering for this forum?

If not, where should I register and what are the benefits?

Darn noobies!

Thanks

I think registering for the forum is different to registering with shell live-wire and I believe you do that by clicking on "my account".

I have also heard rumours that they send you an information pack but that could be rubbish because I have yet to receive mine!!! (hint, hint)

The major benefit for me is this forum. It's probably the best one that I have come across, apart from that not really sure??!!!

Registering with Shell LiveWIRE is different to registering on this forum.

If you register online with Shell LiveWIRE at www.shell-livewire.org (http://www.shell-livewire.org), and you are within the 16-30 age group, you will be able to download two booklets - 'Market Research for the first time' and 'Writing your first Business Plan'. You will also be emailed a factsheet dealing with your particular business idea, plus you will also gain access to all the information within the Be Your Own Boss section of the site.

To register at www.shell-livewire.org (http://www.shell-livewire.org), choose 'Your Account' from the navigation options at the bottom of the web pages.

If anybody has registered and has not received anything back from Shell LiveWIRE, please email us to let us know and we will rectify this.

Yeah I fully recommend registering with the main site, it has an enormous amount of handy information on it and the fact sheets that they e-mail are quite handy as well.
