in the long and slow journey from brilliant idea to up and running business I have noticed that you cannot register a company name (with companies house) that is similar to another existing company name.

In short the company name I thought i might have is already taken. How do i get around this? there must be a million taxi companies out there called a2b cabs - what do they do about billing etc. Can I operate using a said business name? I dont want to have a situation where you employ the services of one company and then bill another?

Do you just make the company name very small on the invoice? :)

You may find the following article, and the links contained within, of use:

Yes thanks for that - this is what I read to find that
The name isn't the same as - or very similar to - one already in the register

what i want to know is how i operate as a2b cabs if there are others already using this name?

Do you have a company name and a seperate operating name?
How does this effect billing etc?

I think (correct me if I am wrong) that what you would do is register say 'a2b cabs of London' or 'a2b cabs - high quality taxi service'. And then just trade as a2b, but on all official documents use the full name with bi-line?

Yes, you could go for A2B Cabs (Cheltenham) Ltd or something like that. The other companies could still try and stop you, but wouldn't have much chance as there are so many firms already.

So, example if

"bucket consulting limited" is already registered
can i register
"bucket limited"?

I'd recommend taking a look at the following, and then contacting Companies House:

Yes you could.

Try searching for Netcomm UK and you'll msee there's loads.

Netcomm UK Ltd,
Netcomm Ltd
Netcom UK Ltd
Netcom Ltd

etc, etc.

I am surprised there at that many Netcomms as you are not meant to be allowed similar names.

Why not register as road motorway transportation and haulage contractors specialising in personal transport Limited and then trade as A2B?
