View Full Version : Advice on business idea

I am 18 years old and have only just got into business and I have always wanted to set up my own business.I have a business idea but if I were to pursue it , I would have invested quite a lot into it.
My business idea is an online shop which specialises in tanning products such as fake bake, st tropez, l'oreal etc and would have a range of bronzers and blushers. it would be the place for all the customers tanning needs and I would hopefully be able to sell all the products slightly cheaper than the larger retailers.I want the website to include customer reviews on tanning products and tips on how to apply the tan and prep the skin. The problem that I have is that I would want to include a range of products and obviously with that , comes risks. Currently there is not any one website that just caters for tanning products at home etc.
Any advice or tips - is this feasible?
How would I be able to start small with this idea and then expand?

Welcome to the forum!
Great news that you have decided you want to set up your own business.
I have worked in the beauty industry for 13 years, so i can give you some advice.
I would suggest you perform as much research as you can into fake tan products, i personally rely on boots for my fake tan as they have a much bigger range than they ever have, not only can you buy them in store you can also purchase them online too. Same with superdrug plus they have reviews on their products, so that is what you are competing with.
With regards to St tropez you will need to have a min order of £1000 i believe, they may have other requirements too, not sure about the others.
How will you sell them cheaper and compete with big online shops?
Then you will need a website with a shopping basket facility.
Have you been to any beauty trade shows?

At this stage, I feel that there is not a real market out there for selling the fake tan products online a
since I would not have the buying power that all the main high street retailers have.In addition, I would need to have an extensive range of products and obviously I am not in a position to spend an absolute fortune on inventory especially as a start up business- I want to start small and then scale up. I still want to sell cosmetics (not particularly fake tans) online for a reduced price either on ebay or a small online e-commerce website. Do you know any wholesalers which would supply cosmetics at a reasonable price because I have been finding it extremely hard to find wholesalers which are genuine and not just the middleman and whose prices, allow me to make a profit.

I mentioned before, have you been to Beauty trade shows? For example there is one coming up at Olympia London. There you will find a range of wholesalers.
Sorry i am a bit confused are you now saying you dont think there is a market for fake tan products on line or there is, but there are no businesses offering this service?
The most important thing is, You need to get really clear about what you want to do.
So what type of products do you want to sell? which brands? do you know which brands sell? and how much they sell for?
Have you though about how you are going to sell them?
If you want to sell on ebay this is the most cost effective way but then you have lots of other people selling the same products as you, sometimes for cheaper too!
GO direct to the Brand that you want to retail, but then you will need to place a bigger order to get the wholesale price, otherwise you might have to go to a middleman.
